John Butters
John Butters is a Counselling Psychologist with specialist endorsement through AHPRA. He has worked in psychiatric settings between 1998 and 2008 where he worked across a number of clinical populations including drug and alcohol; general psychiatric; trauma and personality disorders.
Between 2003 and 2008 he worked in both in- and outpatient services at St John of God Hospital, Burwood where he coordinated the outpatient DBT program. In this role, he received intensive training and ongoing supervision with John Hunter Health Services who were responsible for duplicating Marsha Linehan’s DBT program in Newcastle. He also worked as a group therapist for the civilian PTSD program.
John has also undergone training in psychodynamic psychotherapy - which has included a five-year intensive training in Self-Psychology. Between 2007 and 2012, he also received basic, advanced and supervisor training in MBT (Mentalization Based Therapy) through the Anna Freud Centre (London) by Prof. P Fonagy and Dr A Bateman, which lead him to supervise in this modality. Between 2002 and the present, John has presented training to clinicians through Think Education, AABCAP, CASPC, Karitane and other health services.
Since 2008, John has worked in private practice In Crows Nest and Pyrmont. In this capacity he is a clinical supervisor and clinician providing short- to long-term counselling and psychotherapy services. In 2017, John also completed a Research Masters at Macquarie University in epistemic trust and social learning in psychotherapy contexts.
